Product Description

In the Broken Rainbow activity students see the colors of light!

White light from the sun is made from several colors.  Sometimes, light strikes an object and the the light is bent. Each color bounces off at a slightly different angle to form a rainbow. The colors are always in the same order.  You can remember this order by memorizing ROY G BIV, which stands for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.  The Teacher's Guide provides background information to help guide the discussions and activities about light and colors.

Students will:

  • View the colors of the rainbow through special glasses
  • Observe colors through the teacher's spectrum
  • Learn the order of colors in the color spectrum
  • Paste color swatches, in order, on the student worksheet

The materials in the "Broken Rainbow" activity allow each student to use their own special glasses to observe refracted light. Students will also get a chance to use the teacher's spectrum to see light refracted by a different instrument.  Each student receives their own worksheet to paste the color swatches in the same order as the rainbow. The activity comes complete with 25 refraction glasses, 25 groups of ROYGBIV color swatches and 25 student worksheets.

For the teacher, each Broken Rainbow Kit comes with a Teacher's Guide and a Spectrum.  The Teacher's Guide is written in such a way that the instructor is able to teach this lesson on a professional level.

The Classroom Kits are packaged so that each student receives their own materials to perform the activity's investigation. The lab materials are separated, for each student, to minimize preparation time in the classroom. All kits include the necessary materials to perform the activity. No outside materials (with the exception of water in some activities) are required. The kits even include common classroom materials if the activity requires them such as crayons, pencils, or tape.
