The objective of the Pendulum Investigation is to learn and apply the scientific method to describe how different variables effect the motion of a pendulum.  A pendulum is a weight hung from a fixed point that can freely swing back and forth.  The time it takes the weight to swing away and pack again is called a period.  Several factors contribute to the speed of a pendulum.  Students will use the Scientific Method to explore different variables and how changing them effect the pendulum's period.

The Scientific Method is a logical step-by-step guide for scientific thinking:

  • Observation - sensory input
  • Question or Problem - what one may wonder or ask during observations
  • Hypothesis - the best guess, answer or prediction
  • Test - procedure for investigating a hypothesis
  • Results or Data - of what happened during the testing
  • Conclusion - verification of the hypothesis

In the Pendulum Activity, the students will:

  • Apply the scientific method using a pendulum to investigate different hypothesis and observations with a pendulum
  • Learn how changing the pendulum's weight effects the pendulum
  • Observe how changing the length of the pendulum changes the swing
  • Predict how changing the angle of the starting point changes the swing

The student materials allow each student to conduct their own pendulum investigation, using the scientific method.

Each Classroom Kit comes with a Teacher's Guide, Student Worksheets and a 25 sets of lab materials for each activity. The Teacher's guides are written in such a way that any instructor, if the lesson plans are followed, is able to teach every lesson on a professional level. 25 copies of the student lesson plans are conveniently provided for each student activity. The kits are designed so that an educator opens the box and can begin teaching.

The Classroom Kits are packaged so that each student receives their own materials to perform the activity's investigation. The lab materials are separated, for each student, to minimize preparation time in the classroom. All kits include the necessary materials to perform the activity. No outside materials (with the exception of water in some activities) are required. The kits even include common classroom materials if the activity requires them such as crayons, pencils, or tape.

The Homeschool Kits contain a teacher manual, student activity worksheets, and lab activities packaged for one student.
